PINTAIL

DUCK ISLAND 20

The Duck Island 20 was originally 18'6" and was designed and built by Dave Barber of Groton, CT. "Come Go" as she is named is plank on frame construction of cedar and oak with bronze screw fasteners. She serves as our yard work boat, and play boat as well. Having proved herself as an amazing all-around, utility boat, holding her own in a chop, and maneuvering easily with a tow in tight quarters. We decided to embellish the design and came up with "Pintail," the Duck Island 20 - what we came up with is the following:

  • Lengthened her 18" for a bit more space and sea-worthiness
  • Raised the sheer and coaming "above the knee" for comfort underway
  • Added spray rails for dryness
  • Deepened the skeg a few more inches for tracking
  • All deck surfaces are plywood, fiberglass, and Awlgrip for easy cleaning and no maintenance
  • Glued, mahogany strip planking on intermediate oak frames for easier construction and future care
  • No epoxy or glass on the hull so she’ll soak up and maintain the added weight for a smooth and stable ride like her predecessor
  • Added dodger, tent extension and cushions for camping and overnight fishing trips, or to just get out of the sun!
  • A tow bit for towing boats or the kids!
  • Two coolers for provisions
  • And two very comfortable John Deere tractor seats!
